A group led by Robin Boustead walked the Great Himalaya Trail for the first time in 2008 and 2009 after years of study, documenting, and mapping. The first journey took 157 days to successfully complete and lasted from February through August of 2011.

GHT is a route through the Greater Himalayas range rather than the quickest or most direct route across Nepal. Although there are many high passes above 5,000 meters and little technical climbing is necessary, the 150-day or longer expedition is reportedly much more challenging than ascending any one mountain.

There are two options for hikers. The GHT High route in Nepal offers breathtaking views of the nation's soaring peaks as it winds across high mountain ranges at an average altitude of 3000 to 5000 meters. About 1,700 kilometers of the trail travel through breathtaking high-altitude mountain scenery, stopping at some of the world's most isolated communities where life hasn't changed much in decades. Adventure trekking is available on the high-altitude route, which combines high-pass crossings, trans-Himalayan vistas, and alpine valleys.

The GHT initiative seeks to advance tourism throughout the entire Nepali Himalayan region, providing a considerable boost to the country's tourism sector.
