The Czech Republic is a country with a very rich spiritual tradition. For more than a millennium, the country has been building on a Christian tradition, and the Jewish tradition and culture has also played a significant part in its development. The marks left behind by human faith are ubiquitous.

The Czech Republic has two exceptional Jewish monuments. The oldest synagogue in Central Europe is in Prague (the Old New Synagogue), and the third-largest synagogue in the world is in Pilsen (the Great Synagogue).

The most frequent form of a ghetto was an aisle with a row of houses or cottages. Whole quarters with a network of streets and a synagogue or a house of prayer were only preserved in towns with larger Jewish communities, such as Dolní Kounice and Luže.

The largest preserved ghettos are in Mikulov, Boskovice and Třebíč, the last of which is listed by UNESCO. The UNESCO list also includes Villa Tugendhat, built by Jewish factory owner Fritz Tugendhat in the 1930s in Brno.
