Stubai Valley: Water is a life force! Constantly on the move, powerful, shaping and energy-giving, water has been entrancing humans ever since the dawn of time. It is particularly exciting to trace the route of a rushing river back to its source and to walk in its footsteps. On the WildWaterPath in the Stubai Valley with its unique mountain views, you will experience water in a fantastic way. From glacier fields glittering in the sun to turquoise mountain lakes, from hundreds of tiny sources which come together to form crashing waterfalls , through to small meadows and marshland – water appears in all these different forms on the WildWaterPath.
The WildWaterPath in the Stubai Valley is the most impressive and interesting mountain hike which can be done in the glacier valley. There are fascinating insights and views for visitors there. The tour leads you to picturesque log cabins, past gently flowing streams and crashing waterfalls. Day trips and individual hikes which were conceived around the most interesting sites of the WildWaterPath are perfect for pausing awhile to take in the view. You will have unforgettable memories of pleasurable trips to improve your health at the waterside and afternoons with the family in the cool water.
Experience wild water along nine kilometres and 1,200 m altitude difference
The WildWaterPath can be attempted in three stages, and leads from the Tschangelair Alm to the banks of the Ruetz and via the Sulzenau Alm to the Sulzenau Hut. The end of the path is the source of the water at the Sulzenau Glacier. It is from this glacier field that the water first comes to the surface, makes its way to the valley and shapes the nature display of the WildWaterPath.
The clearly signed route leads hikers to impressive spots in the middle of wild beauty. The way to the mountains leads from the valley right up to where there are no more trees - and takes you past mighty waterfalls such as the Grawa and the Sulzenau. With views over impressive glacier phenomena such as the cracks in the Sulzenau glacier and the Zuckerhütl, you will wander through a landscape filled with large moraines and turquoise mountain lakes, smaller pools, sandy marsh areas, smooth glacier ridges and idyllic humid biotopes, all surrounded by extensive areas of cottongrass. Some of these natural processes which can be marvelled at during the tour often take several thousand years to come about.
The walk appeals not only to the body, but also to the senses. You will feel the force of the water, the crashing of waterfalls and their spray on your skin, smell the damp moss, taste the fresh mineral water from the source and hear the powerful rushing and delicate gurgling of streams. All of these unique spots are also rejuvenation points for body and soul.
The Grawa Waterfall and its health benefits
The centrepiece of the WildWaterPath is the Grawa Waterfall – the widest waterfall in the eastern Alps. The waterfall is the central starting point for many hiking trails near the Grawa Alm. And it isn’t just the spectacular display of nature which delights countless visitors every year. The waterfall also boasts numerous health benefits. A research report published by Paracelsus private medical university in 2011 proved that spending just one hour at the foot of the waterfall - in the spray - significantly improves healing to the upper respiratory system, and that people’s personal perception of their breathing quality is also more positive. To make this phenomenon, and the experience of the Grawa Waterfall accessible to all, the hiking trail was extended there. Starting from the Grawa Alm and the Raffeine Avalanche Gallery, there is now a wheelchair-accessible path to the waterfall. At the foot of the waterfall, there is an artistic platform with two areas which have been designed to blend in with the landscape. There is one for visitors who only wish to stand for a short while and a second platform for the majority of people, who want to spend longer in front of the impressive wall of water and enjoy its health benefits.
Fun in the Water at the Klaus Äuele Kids’ Park
The Klaus Äuele WildWaterPlayground creates an experience which will fascinate children with the force of the water. The “Land of the Shore Runner” has been designed to resemble a dried up river bed. Children can enjoy a playground with climbing walls, a ropes course with a wobbly log and beginners’ low-ropes course, a flying fox over the water, a float for exploring the pond, and a water playground with a water wheel. While the kids have fun building dams in the water or letting model ships float down the stream, parents can relax and enjoy their time on generous sun loungers.
