8 kilometers north is the village of Untertauern at 1,009 meters. On the south side of the pass, at 1,233 meters, Tweng in Salzburg's Lungau region is also 8 kilometers away from Obertauern.

Local Specialties

Due to its geographical location, Obertauern is fortunate to have both vast amounts of snow from the north and snowfall from the south. Coupled with its high altitude, this makes Obertauern the snowiest winter sports resort in Austria. Another special feature: the mountains around Obertauern are in the shape of a bowl. This means that you can find slopes in all exposures, and if you want, you can ski in the sun throughout the whole day.

Season Duration

The motto of the winter season 2022/23 is: WE ARE BACK. The expected start of the season is November 25, 2022, and the end of the season is May 1, 2023.

We Are Back On Stage

Obertauern starts the Winterseason 22/23 with Sarah Connor and the “Söhne Mannheims” on December 02 Finally the time has come; the anticipation of visitors and locals is huge: After a two-year break due to the pandemic, Obertauern is once again celebrating the start of the winter season with a spectacular event.

The absolute highlight of the ski opening weekend from December 2 to 4 is the performance of Sarah Connor on December 2. The Pop and Soulsinger will perform on an open-air stage on the top of the pass in front of the dreamlike mountain scenery of Obertauern. The concert night at an altitude of 1,740 meters will be kicked off by another big name on the German music scene - the "Söhne Mannheims".

Obertauern is back on the big stage, where stars and bands like Culcha Candela, Glasperlenspiel, Andreas Bourani, Wanda, Josh, Cro, Die Toten Hosen, Andreas Gabalier or Weekend have been setting the mood for carefree vacation days in the snow since 1996 at the Ski Opening. Or to say it with a song by Sarah Connor: "Life is beautiful". The party mood is completed on this cheerful, carefree weekend by the numerous après ski parties in the surrounding huts and in Obertauern itself.

Snow fun for families with "Bobby's snow adventure With "Bobby's Snow Adventure" Obertauern provides an attractive vacation offer for families. On selected dates - both during the winter vacations as well as before and after - families receive many services at a favorable package price. The local mascot "Bobby" offers two packages, one for children from 3-5 years and one package for children from 6 to 14 years.

First.Track Events

The First.Track events are also among the absolute highlights in Obertauern. Leaving the first track on the freshly groomed slope or in the deep snow off-piste is a very special experience. Together with ski instructors and locals, winter sports enthusiasts are on their way to the snow-covered peaks early in the morning at 7:30 a.m., where they not only enjoy a dream view of Obertauern, but above all the anticipation of making their first track on freshly groomed slopes.

When these then slowly fill up, the early risers have long since sat down to the alpine brunch that concludes this extraordinary experience. As a memento of an already unforgettable morning, all participants receive a high-quality goodie bag.

Kids

Throughout the winter season, children up to 5 years old ski for free when accompanied by their parents.

Children’s Tauern Loop The well-known and popular Tauernrunde is also available in a two-fold version for children and young people, adapted to their abilities and condition. The "Bobby-Round", named after the snow bunny and local mascot "Bobby", gives the younger children variety and lots of fun. The "My Track" round for the more advanced children and teenagers is exciting and challenging. On both Tauern Loops, a fun park, a timed track, a ghost train, and a wave track encourage young guests to share their Obertauern experiences under the hashtag #LOVEOBERTAUERN.

Bobby Land

Since 2019, the adventure area "Bobby Land" has been entertaining the little guests. While there are puzzles to solve in "Bobby's Monster Park" with its funny figures, there is a wave run and a course for the bigger kids. The children's igloo is another attraction, and kids can warm up in the recreation room. At "Bobby's Slalom" the little ski bunnies practice their turns in a playful way, in "Bobby's Ghost Train" in the fairy tale park at the Schaidbergbahn they ski through a mysterious cave.

Snowbikes and Toboggan Taxi

In Obertauern, young guests can also enjoy a change of pace from skiing and snowboarding: try out snowbikes, discover cross-country skiing on trails suitable for beginners or go on a tobogganing excursion with their parents - including a ride on the Skidoo. The speedy ride on this horsepower-packed toboggan cab is a particularly impressive vacation experience for the kids.

Families with small children can also test CYBEX strollers with compatible snow equipment free of charge in selected hotels. The winter hiking trails of Obertauern are the ideal test routes, and the huts along the way are welcome occasions for a leisurely stop.
BobbyTV for the little ones BobbyTV offers playful infotainment via animated films for the next generation of skiers. The 7 episodes on topics such as the rules on the slopes, proper warming up and the formation of snow are broadcast via the local panorama channel.
