An Olympic Dream: Ice Climbing at Beijing 2022

Mission 2022 represents the UIAA’s Olympic ambition. The ultimate goal is the inclusion of ice climbing as an official sport competition programme at the 2022 Winter Olympic Games in Beijing. At the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics Games, ice climbing was presented as a cultural event at the Olympic Park during the Games.

The UIAA organized the finest international ice climbers to come and demonstrate the huge appeal and potential of this sport on a magnificent ice tower built specifically for the event.

Following on from its success in Sochi, ice climbing will feature as an initiation sport at the Youth Olympic Games in Lillehammer, to be held in February 2016.

"We aim to be part of the Winter Olympic program as an event in 2022," explains UIAA President Frits Vrijlandt. "We achieved a first step with our presence at the 2014 Sochi Olympic Games. In the meantime, we are committed to increasing the quantity and quality of the events together with the support of the ice climbing community from the ice climber to the national federation, we will be able to reach this common ambition. Ice climbing would be the only vertical sport in the Olympic programme and is attractive to the youth and fun to watch."

The UIAA is recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and has been a member of the Olympic family since 1995.
