AKTUALIZACE Výstup na Matterhorn hřebenem Hörnli vyžaduje větší zkušenost s pohybem v horách, více rozvahy, orientačního smyslu a vytrvalosti. Italský hřeben Lion klade vyšší nároky na sílu a schopnost co nejefektivněji využívat umělé fixní pomůcky.
Hlavní horolezecká sezona na Matterhornu je od poloviny června do konce září. Aktuální informace o počasí jsou k dispozici na Meteoswiss.
Poprvé jsem se před tuto otázku ocitnul v situaci, kdy nebylo kam couvnout: seděl jsem v dodávce jednoho z zermattských horských vůdců a těšil se, že se tímto stopem dostanu pohodlně až do Zermattu, což urychlí mé pozdně odpolední přiblížení ke zvolenému cíli.
Silnicí z Vispu jsme stoupali skoro tak rychle, jako zpěněná voda ledovcové řeky Matter Vispa hluboko pod námi, a živě diskutovali o horách. Po chvíli se rozhovor stočil k logickému tématu, tj. kam mám vlastně namířeno.
Na odpověď pokýval sympaticky působící profík hlavou a trochu zachmuřeně se rozpovídal o zástupech lidí, které se každý den valí z Zermattu k vrcholu Hory hor. Motivy ale chápal, a tak kromě návrhu zdolat lezecky zajímavější sousední Obergabelhorn a fascinující Matterhorn si vychutnat z toho nejlepšího možného místa, přidal ještě další radu: odjet do italské Cervínie a vydat se na vrchol Matterhornu (Monte Cervino, Mont Cervin) hřebenem Liongrat, který je podstatně bezpečnější.
Argumenty zněly velmi přesvědčivě, ale na plánu už nic nezměnily - jako cesta k vrcholu tehdy posloužil švýcarský hřeben Hörnligrat. Dobře míněné rady ale neupadly v zapomnění a po pár letech byl prověřen vyhlídkový Obergabelhorn i italský hřeben Liongrat.

Matterhorn je hora, která svým působivým tvarem téměř magicky přitahuje každého, komu není svět hor a horolezectví cizí. Stala se symbolem Alp i mnoha horských spolků, patří mezi nejznámější štíty světa. Z hlediska horolezectví přispívá jejímu kouzlu pohnutá historie hledání cest na vrchol, plná slavných i tragických okamžiků.
To jsou některé z momentů, které k Matterhornu každoročně přitahují tisíce horolezců a vysokohorských turistů. Největšímu náporu je 4478 m vysoký štít vystaven v období letních měsíců, kdy jej ze švýcarské a italské strany obléhá kolem stovky lidí denně. Takový provoz pochopitelně přináší zvýšené riziko nehod a úrazů, mezi které téměř každoročně přibude i několik smrtelných. Ani černá čísla však lidem v dalších výstupech nezabrání a jejich touhu po zdolání vrcholu nesníží.
Riziko spojené se slézáním Matterhornu lze eliminovat dodržováním tradičních zásad plánování a realizace výstupu v horách a částečně ovlivnit výběrem vhodné výstupové cesty. Protože většina potenciálních dobyvatelů Matterhornu pochází z řad široké horolezecké veřejnosti, lze při výběru pominout cesty stěnami a technicky i kondičně náročné výstupové cesty jihovýchodním (Furggengrat) a severozápadním hřebenem (Zmuttgrat), a zaměřit se na dvě nejčastěji používané výstupové cesty: tzv. švýcarskou cestu severovýchodním hřebenem Hörnligrat a italskou cestu jihozápadním hřebenem Liongrat.
Severovýchodní hřeben představuje nejčastěji používanou výstupovou cestu na vrchol Matterhornu. Pro výstup je charakteristické převážně lezení snadným skalním terénem, který pouze ojediněle převyšuje II. stupeň obtížnosti.
Sníh a led se může v cestě objevovat nad bivakovací chatou Solvay (4003 m n.m.), prakticky každou sezónu pak souvisle pokrývá závěrečný úsek cca 100 m pod vrcholem, který se leze okrajem severní stěny vpravo od hřebene Hörnli. Nejstrmější část hřebene nad Whymperovým pamětním křížem je zajištěna silnými konopnými lany, která průstup výšvihem značně ulehčí.
Oblíbenost této cesty pramení z relativně snadné a rychlé dostupnosti nástupní chaty Hörnlihütte, ať už s využitím lanovky Zermatt - Furi - Schwarzsee nebo pěším výstupem z Zermattu (4,5 hodiny, 1660 m převýšení) pohodlnými a bezpečnými cestami. Standardní pohodlí poskytují rovněž chaty Hörnli a Belveder včetně možnosti objednání snídaně či polopenze, které se skrývají pod názvem Berghaus Matterhorn.
Další výhodou této cesty je minimální výskyt náročnějších lezeckých úseků, možnost nouzového přespání v bivakovací chatě Solvay na hřebeni ve výšce 4000 m n.m. a převážně závětrná poloha výstupové cesty vůči převažujícím větrům. Velmi často je rovněž využívána možnost placeného transportu v závěsu pod helikoptérou přímo z vrcholu Matterhornu zpět k chatě.
Nevýhody cesty severovýchodním hřebenem souvisí se zmiňovanou vysokou frekventovaností této cesty a s její délkou. Celkové převýšení mezi nástupní chatou a vrcholem Matterhornu přesahuje 1200 výškových metrů, což je vzhledem k velké nadmořské výšce cesty poměrně hodně. Na cestu je třeba vyrážet brzo ráno kolem čtvrté hodiny, za tmy absolvovat spodní část hřebene (pozor na orientaci - je třeba se důsledně držet hřebene a neodchylovat se do východní stěny!) a počítat s dlouhotrvajícím sestupem.
Sestup je většinou ještě zpomalován čekáním na uvolnění fixních lan nad Whymperovým křížem, kde se míjejí pomalejší jedinci stoupající k vrcholu a již sestupující družstva. Velký provoz na hřebeni také zvyšuje četnost uvolněných kamenů a tím i riziko zásahu padajícími úlomky skal. Specifickou překážkou této výstupové cesty je častý výskyt orograficky podmíněného mraku v horní části hřebene. Mrak vzniká kondenzací vzdušné vlhkosti při východní závětrné stěně vrcholové pyramidy Matterhornu v případě, že vane západní vítr. Orientace na hřebenu je v takové situaci značně zhoršena a vedla již k mnoha nehodám.
Obtížnost: AD II, pod bivakovací chatou Solvay III; nad ramenem Schulter konopná fixní lana, výše v severním svahu pod vrcholem možnost jištění za železné tyče; doba výstupu 5-6 hodin z Hörnlihütte, převýšení 1220 výškových metrů; souvislé vynýtování umožňuje slanění celé cesty, které je však vzhledem k relativně malému sklonu spodní poloviny hřebene zbytečné a naopak zdržuje.
Italská cesta jihozápadním hřebenem je druhou nejčastěji používanou výstupovou cestou na vrchol a od švýcarské cesty hřebenem Hörnli se v některých aspektech výrazně liší. Jedná se o cestu, která má především podstatně větší průměrný sklon, což se projevuje přítomností řady strmých až svislých skalních stupňů. Tyto stupně zpravidla dosahují výšky několika metrů, na dvou místech se však blíží polovině lanové délky, tj. 20-25 m.
Stupně jsou vesměs zajištěny fixními pomůckami, převážně v podobě silných konopných lan a řetězů. V celé své délce má cesta charakter skalního lezení a vzhledem k převažující jižní orientaci je po většinu letní sezóny prostá sněhu a ledu. Mačky a cepín jsou na italské cestě proto koncem léta potřeba pouze na exponovaný přechod spojovacího hřebene od italského (4476) ke švýcarskému vrcholu (4478), který je přibližně šedesát metrů dlouhý.
Hlavní výhoda cesty vyplývá z velkorysého použití fixních prostředků, které umožňují vystoupit na vrchol i lezecky méně zdatným lidem a současně přispívají k větší bezpečnosti výstupu. V této souvislosti je nutno říci, že pokud by v italské cestě uvedené fixní pomůcky nebyly, jednalo by se o lezecky náročný výstup, který by svou obtížností výrazně převyšoval švýcarskou cestu hřebenem Hörnli a blížil by se lezecky náročným cestám po zbývajících hřebenech Matterhornu.
Druhá výhoda italské výstupové cesty hřebenem Lion spočívá ve vysoko položené startovní chatě Carrel (3835), která stojí o téměř šest set metrů výš než chata Hörnli na stejnojmenném švýcarském hřebenu, a činí tak výstup z hlediska celkového převýšení skoro o polovinu kratší.
Absence podstatnějších ledových a sněhových úseků v této cestě již byla zmíněna výše, převážně kompaktní skála pak v porovnání s hřebenem Hörnli snižuje riziko padajícího kamení. V neposlední řadě je tato cesta orientačně jednoduchá, což souvisí jak s četnými fixy, tak s dlouhými úseky vedenými po úzkém hřebeni Tyndalgrat.
Z výše popsaného charakteru italské cesty hřebenem Lion vyplývají i její negativa. Překonávání četných skalních stupňů vyžaduje značnou sílu a výdrž rukou. Pohyb po fixních lanech ruce zatěžuje podstatně více než lezení po skále, což může slabším nebo netrénovaným jedincům působit značné těžkosti. V souvislosti s fixními lany je dobré rovněž upozornit na skutečnost, že většina cesty znalých lezců používá při výstupu stejných rukavic, jako při túrách po ferrátách. Sílu v rukou sice nenahradí, ale k větší pohodě výstupu a sestupu rozhodně přispějí.
Nepříznivým aspektem italského hřebene je rovněž jeho západní, a tedy převážně návětrná orientace. Pokud panuje bezvětří nebo vane slabý vítr, pak se tento fakt neprojeví. Silný vítr však činí výstup hřebenem Lion značně nepříjemným a často bývá dokonce limitujícím faktorem úspěšného zdolání vrcholu!
Za poněkud subjektivní nevýhodu cesty hřebenem Lion lze považovat jeho zaneřádění a degradaci nadměrným použitím fixních prostředků. Přitom by na většině inkriminovaných míst stačilo pouze jejich osazení jistícími body: výstup by bylo možno bezpečně odjistit a čistota výstupu by zůstala zachována.
Obtížnost: AD II až III-, značná část zajištěna řetězy, konopnými a ojediněle též ocelovými fixními lany a jedním žebříkem; sestup urychlují četné slaňovací nýty; 4-5 hodin z Rifugio Carrel, 650 výškových metrů.
Při výběru cesty je třeba v první řadě přihlédnout k aktuálním povětrnostním podmínkám a stavu obou výstupových cest. Za silného větru bude výstup italskou cestou obtížný až nemožný, zatímco průstup hřebenem Hörnli nemusí být větrem výrazně ohrožen. Sněhové podmínky mohou být naopak limitujícím faktorem ve švýcarské cestě, kde se vzhledem k menšímu sklonu akumuluje podstatně více sněhu, který zde může ve velkém množství přetrvat až do poloviny léta. V první polovině sezóny bude tedy Matterhorn pravděpodobně schůdnější z Itálie, v srpnu a v září už budou hrát větší roli případné větry.
Chcete-li vystoupit na vrchol alespoň jakžtakž sportovně, pak zvolte švýcarský hřeben Hörnli. Umělých pomůcek je zde minimálně, což se nedá říct o italském hřebenu Lion, kde je vyfixována odhadem třetina celkové délky.
Pro nabušence z tělocvičen, kteří nemají až takový vztah k horám, ale mají hodně síly, lze naopak italskou cestu doporučit. Svou sílu využijí už při výstupu po fixech na chatu Carrel a s případnými menšími zkušenostmi s pohybem v horách bude v souladu kratší a orientačně poměrně jednoduchý výstup z chaty na vrchol a zpět. Ti, kteří jsou se silou svých paží na štíru, mohou mít s vyslovenou hákovačkou hřebene Lion značné problémy, čehož jsme byli několikrát očitými svědky.

Zubačka z Täsch do Zermatt jezdí denně 6:30 - 23:35 hodin. Lanovka z Zermattu přes Furi na Schwarzsee jezdí denně za dobrého počasí. První jízda z Zermattu v 7 hod., poslední jízda ze Schwarzsee v 17:50 hod.
