The Everest Base Camp trek is a bucket-list adventure, promising breathtaking landscapes and a deep dive into Sherpa culture. However, beyond the Instagram-worthy views and inspirational stories, there are many aspects of the trek that aren’t often discussed.

If you’re planning your own journey to Everest Base Camp, here’s what you need to know before you go.

1. Lukla Flights Are Unpredictable (Often Delayed or Canceled)

Most trekkers fly from Kathmandu to Lukla, the gateway to the EBC trek. What many don’t realize is that flights are frequently delayed or canceled due to unpredictable weather. The tiny airstrip, wedged between mountains, requires near-perfect conditions for landing. Be prepared for long wait times at the airport, and consider having extra buffer days in your itinerary.

2. The Trek Is Not Just About Physical Fitness

Yes, you need to be in good shape, but altitude plays a bigger role than fitness level. Even the fittest trekkers can suffer from altitude sickness if they ascend too quickly. Acclimatization days are crucial, and it’s essential to listen to your body rather than pushing through symptoms.

3. Your Appetite Might Disappear

As you gain altitude, your body diverts energy to adapting rather than digesting. This can lead to a loss of appetite, making it difficult to eat enough calories. You’ll need to force yourself to eat, even when you’re not hungry, to maintain your energy levels.

4. The Cost of Everything Rises with Elevation

A bottle of water in Lukla might cost $1, but by the time you reach Gorak Shep, expect to pay USD 4–USD 5. Everything, from snacks to Wi-Fi, gets exponentially more expensive as you ascend because supplies are transported by porters and yaks. Consider bringing water purification tablets to save money on bottled water.

5. Teahouse Comforts Are Basic at Best

Teahouses along the route provide meals and accommodation, but don’t expect luxury. Many rooms have thin plywood walls, shared bathrooms, and limited heating (usually only in the dining area). Electricity and Wi-Fi are often unreliable, and hot showers come at an extra cost.

6. The Toilets Can Be… Challenging

Above Namche Bazaar, Western-style flush toilets become rare. You’ll encounter squat toilets, which can be daunting for first-timers. Bring toilet paper (not always provided) and hand sanitizer, as soap and running water are often scarce.

7. You’ll Wake Up to Frozen Water Bottles

At higher altitudes, indoor temperatures can drop below freezing. If you leave your water bottle out, it might be frozen solid by morning. Keep it inside your sleeping bag to prevent this, and do the same with batteries, as the cold drains them quickly.

8. Headaches, Nausea, and Shortness of Breath Are Normal

Mild altitude symptoms, like headaches, nausea, and shortness of breath, are common. What’s important is recognizing when these symptoms become dangerous. If symptoms worsen, descending is the only option. Never ignore severe signs of altitude sickness.

9. The Descent Is Tougher Than You Expect

Many people focus on reaching base camp and underestimate the return journey. The descent is long and can be just as exhausting, especially on your knees. Trekking poles can help ease the strain on your joints.

10. The Trek Is as Much a Mental Challenge as a Physical One

Long days of hiking, extreme weather, and basic accommodations can wear you down mentally. There will be moments when you question why you’re doing this, but pushing through and staying positive is part of the challenge. The sense of accomplishment at the end makes it all worth it.

Final Thoughts

The Everest Base Camp trek is an unforgettable experience, but it’s not all picture-perfect moments. Knowing what to expect can help you prepare both mentally and physically. If you go in with realistic expectations and an adventurous spirit, you’ll be able to fully embrace the highs and lows of this incredible journey.
